Thrift Store Donations Make A Big Impact

Volunteer Sondra Epley mans the register at reuse, Richmond Animal Leagues new thrift store. The stores sales benefit RALs adoption efforts.
In Chesterfield, the answer is yes, though the charitable benefit differs from store to store. At Salvation Army Richmond Area Commands Family Stores, 100 percent of the store proceeds go toward funding the organizations Adult Rehabilitation Center, an 87-bed in-house facility for men recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. Goodwill Industries of Central Virginia, which has five stores in Chesterfield County, doesnt release numbers specifically for retail sales, but the nonprofit uses at least 84 percent of all revenue for its programs.
Sales from Goodwills stores benefit the organizations many employment services.
For the larger organizations, donations are absolutely integral to program operations. The Salvation Army, which operates one Chesterfield store on Midlothian Turnpike, funds the ARC entirely through its thrift stores.
We receive no government money, says ARC administrator Guy Nickum, who oversees the regions four stores. The thrift stores fund the total operation. We have a no pay, no play policy. If we cant afford it, we just dont do it. Were very dependent upon our donors.
We only have a one-year lease, says Amy McCracken, RALs executive director. Were doing it on a trial basis. We hope it will be a long-term thing to give us steady income.

Quick Tips For Donation Pickups
Donating items before a move is a fantastic way to lighten your load while benefiting your community at the same time. Before you just throw all of your unwanted items in a box and schedule a donation pickup or a drop-off, go through these tips to make sure that youre donating items of value and choosing the right charity for your stuff.
Dropping Off Your Donation Instead
If youre opting for a drop-off, find out what options are available. Sometimes you can drive up to the charitys store for a quick hand-off. Other charities provide bins and boxes for contactless drop-off, and sometimes you have to go into an actual facility. Especially if you are doing a contactless drop-off, make sure to pair like items, label them, and dont include anything you dont think will sell, like any damaged items. You shouldnt donate anything you cant move or safely store in a storage facility of a moving container. That goes for any hazardous items, like explosives or flammables and corrosives. And, again, ask for a receipt. Even if you use a drive-through option, a staff member should be able to provide you with a receipt.
Doesnt it feel good to do good? Donating through charities that pick up is an excellent way to get rid of stuff, especially big items that are difficult to move on your own. So next time youre ready to edit down your belongings, dont just toss them. Instead, schedule a charity pickup and give a new purpose to your unwanted items.
Done donating before your move? If so, its time to find the best moving company to handle your upcoming move. Check Moving.coms extensive network of reputable and reliable movers. All relocation companies in our network are licensed and insured, so you can rest assured that your move will be in good hands. Good luck and happy moving!

Annual Angel Tree Program In Need Of Donations And Volunteers
The Angel Tree is a holiday tradition thousands of central Virginians participate in every year.
RICHMOND, Va. – NBC12 and Salvation Army are kicking off the annual Angel Tree program, which needs donations and volunteers to help those in need this holiday season.
The Angel Tree is a holiday tradition thousands of central Virginians participate in yearly.
For many families, adopting an Angel is a wonderful way to share the spirit of the season with others in our community who are less fortunate.
Each Angel represents a real child in our community who needs your help.
Salvation Army volunteers began meeting with families in need last week in Petersburg.
Thousands of families will meet with the Salvation Army this week to discuss their Angel Tree applications at the Christmas Center located at Stony Point Fashion Park.
Volunteers will get the name of each child or senior, along with a list of their desired Christmas gifts.
Sometimes, its My child doesnt have a bed, and they would really like a twin bed. Sometimes, its my child needs a specific backpack or a specific item for school, and so were able to put those things down as a request, Captain Jason Burns said.
Burns says the rising costs of inflation are increasing the need for help.
He says they served just over 4,500 hundred families last year, but theyre expecting a bigger turnout this year.
Were not sure why, but we know were lagging a little bit behind last years volunteer sign-ups, said Burns.
What You Need To Know About Donating Books
Most charities will accept book donations, but it doesnt mean theyll take any book, in any condition. Donations to libraries generally come with more restrictions, but some charities also wont take outdated, torn, highlighted or moldy books. Like with other types of donations, please ask first if youre unsure about anything book donation-related.
Ideally, the books should be in good enough shape to hold up when you pick them up and recent enough so as not to contain very outdated information . Some charities wont accept textbooks , encyclopedias , and periodicals. Although the latter might attract some collectors, most should just be recycled.
Instead of donating to the charity, you can try to give your unwanted books to local hospitals or shelters, used bookstores for reselling, nursing homes, local literacy programs, prison libraries or those little free libraries in your community. You can also try setting up a book swap with your friends and family, or just get crafty and create art like a collage, using pages from the books you no longer want to keep.

How Can You Donate
Step 1:
Donations are connected directly to families in need, so please review your items to ensure they are suitable for CARITAS. Then request a pick-up from our Furniture Bank staff.
Step 2:
Gather the items we need the most! Get your friends, family, and coworkers in on the action! Host a furniture or household goods drive. Go big by requesting a truck to be dropped off so your neighborhood or congregation can fill it. Go small by picking one item like pillows, towels, or blankets to collect with your family or office. You can also shop off our Amazon lists: shop for The Healing Place for Men or The Healing Place for Women.
Step 3:
Get your donations to CARITAS! You can either drop off donations or request we pick them up. Drop off donations of furniture and household essentials Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2220 Stockton Street. Please call ahead before you drop items off to ensure they are appropriate for our program: 358-0964. Disposal of items we cannot give to families costs CARITAS $11,000 a year that we would much rather use to support our neighbors in need.
Cant find the time, the truck, or the energy to bring your items to us? We make it easy to donate your large furniture items via our pick-up services! We have two furniture pick-up options.
Furniture Accepted At Vietnam Veterans Of America
VVA accepts almost anything in good, usable condition. However, they mostly focus on small furniture including headboards, nightstands, chairs, and filing cabinets rather than sectionals. Not sure if the furniture you want to donate is too large? Only items that can be easily lifted and carried by a single person are accepted. You can see their list of acceptable donations here.

Arrange An Appointment Time
Salvation Army donation debate rages as activist call out charity
After deciding on a company to help your decluttering process, choose an hour and day that suits both of your schedules. The day of the week can impact availability, so if you may squeeze in this process during weekdays, your options will likely expand. Most declutter and moving operations occur during the weekend which increases demand and perhaps wait times.
Another circumstance to be wary of is weather. A warm day is great for moving. A cloudy day is even better. Consider avoiding rainy or windy days as these settings may compromise moving safety and the integrity of the items being donated for furniture pickup.
To make sure your appointment makes it on the organizations calendar, schedule the pick up at least two weeks before Moving Day. The earlier you schedule, the better!
